Varsity Rowing Spring Training Report

The Kings Point Varsity Rowing team has had a busy spring break in Jacksonville Florida. After arriving on Saturday evening, Coach Derek Hartwick and assistant Coach Daniel Udeanu got the crew up early on Sunday for a four hour workout on the St. John's River. Following the workout the twelve team members headed off to an reception hosted by Mason Flint '64 and his wife Karin. Fifty local alumni their families and other sponsors came out to show support for the team.

Since Sunday the team has been rowing twice a day in addition to a daily weight room session. The weather has been superb for the team and everyone is enjoying the sun and warmth after a cold and snow-filled winter at Kings Point.

On Monday, Jonathon Christian '86 arranged for the team to tour the U.S.S. Gettysburg. On Tuesday the team completed Wet Trainer Safety training at the Mayport Naval Station. The team had to use different techniques to plug holes and escape through a water-filled hatch. Everyone felt that it was a great learning experience and team-building activity.

Wednesday will be another day of double sessions of rowing in the morning and then some time off in the afternoon. The Jacksonville Alumni chapter has organized a dinner for the team on Thursday evening.

Coach Hartwick and the team are so pleased to have the support of the local Alumni Chapter and the Florida Parents Association. Both groups have been very generous. The team will continue to to train till Saturday and then return to Kings Point.
